The worst part of any DIY project is preparing the surface, especially if you have to remove old paint or rust. I've spent hours and countless pieces of sand paper prepping outdoor fixtures for a fresh coat of paint. While I love buying new tools, my budget, and my cramped garage, can not accommodate a blast cabinet. But with a little ingenuity, you can create your own sand blaster for less than $10.
