Maxeon Solar Technologies has announced plans to open a solar cell and panel manufacturing facility in Mesa del Sol, New Mexico. The company will invest $1 billion to open the new 1.9 million-square-foot plant, generating 1,800 new jobs for the area. The complex will have the ability to produce up to 8 million solar panels per year. Construction on the project, which will be the first large-scale PV cell and panel manufacturing facility in New Mexico, is expected to begin in 2024.
In a recent quote, Maxeon Solar Technologies CEO Bill Mulligan said, “We undertook an intensive process to assess sites across the nation to find the right home for our first U.S. manufacturing facility, which includes solar cell fabrication and panel assembly. New Mexico had everything we were looking for: a strong business-friendly climate, supportive infrastructure, focus on workforce development, and deep roots in energy leadership. We applaud Governor Lujan Grisham and her staff for their vision to create clean energy highly-skilled jobs here to support the much-needed expansion of a domestic supply chain.”
