Three New England states have joined together to create a path to improve wind energy generation. Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut have signed a memorandum of understanding that will allow for a potential multi-state procurement for offshore wind. Under the agreement, which is the first of its kind in the U.S., the states will work together to find and develop offshore wind projects that will benefit the area at a reduced cost. The coalition hopes the MOU will increase economic development in the area, generate new jobs, and promote environmental justice. Offshore wind developers interested in the opportunity must submit multi-state offshore wind project proposals for possible selection in 2024.
In a recent quote, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said, “Offshore wind is an important resource in meeting our Act on Climate and renewable energy goals. “Regional collaboration through this three states MOU will not only help in advancing offshore wind projects of large scale by securing cost-effective energy prices for ratepayers – but it also provides a significant opportunity for long-term economic development that the offshore wind industry will bring to the three states.”
