Worker suffers six fractures after getting hand entangled in radial arm drill

The worker suffered six fractures to the ulna and radius bones in his right hand and arm and had to undergo surgery.

An investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety, has determined that Screening Consultancy and Supplies Ltd could have prevented the injury of one of its workers. Andrew Elson, a 54-year-old employee at the company’s Warwickshire facility, was clearing debris off the bed of a radial arm drill when his right hand became entangled in the machine. According to the HSE, Elson suffered six fractures to the ulna and radius bones in his right hand and arm and had to undergo surgery. 

During its investigation, the HSE found that the company, which manufactures screen media and wear-resistant liners, had not properly assessed the risk associated with this work activity, and had failed to implement a safe system of work. Screening Consultancy and Supplies Ltd, of Somers Road, Rugby, Warwickshire, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The company was fined £28,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,616 at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 19 September 2024.
