Isuzu invests $280M to open automotive manufacturing plant in South Carolina
Isuzu North America Corporation has announced plans to establish a new production base in Greenville County, South Carolina. The company, which specializes in automotive manufacturing, has purchased a 1,000,000-square-foot facility to help expand its vehicle supply capabilities. Isuzu will invest $280 million into the project, creating 700 new jobs by 2028. The new facility will manufacture Isuzu N-Series Gas, N-Series Electric, and F-Series Diesel trucks. Production at the new plant is expected to begin in 2027. By 2030, the facility will have a production capacity of 50,000 units.
What people are saying
According to Isuzu, the new assembly plant will feature a variable-model, variable-volume production system that will be capable of manufacturing both internal combustion engine and electric vehicles. Additionally, the new facility will feature a production line without conveyors or puts, which the company hopes will maximize flexibility and scalability, and inspections will be automated to help eliminate operational errors and improve the identification of defective parts. The facility will allow Isuzu to consolidate KD storage and processing, parts storage, vehicle production and PIO operations all under one roof. Because of the plant’s large size, completed trucks will also be stored on site.
In a recent quote, Noboru Murakami, President of Isuzu North America Corporation, said, “The establishment of an Isuzu-owned and operated production base in the United States reflects both Isuzu’s commitment to, and success in, the North American market. The plant will be optimally designed for our needs, streamline our process, provide us with flexibility to react to changing market conditions, and position us for even greater growth in the North American Market.”
